From Booming to Busted, Feds Force Gaming Sites Offline
The move to paralyze software and service providers came as the result of an indictment handed down by New York officials. The 33-count indictment charges 27 people and three companies with operating unlawful Internet gaming activities which purportedly accepted over $3.3 billion in bets over a period of 28 months.
All Digital Solutions clients were affected by the closure.
Raymond Kelly, New York City's police commissioner, described the operation as the "largest illegal gaming operation we've ever encountered."
Over 60% of Costa Rican-based operations use Digital Solutions' services. While some sites are back online, a number of others are still in the dark. The event marks the first time a service provider and website designers are charged in an illegal gambling bust by the US government.
Operators are said to be scrambling to locate new service providers, though the shut down is expected to last only a couple of days, perhaps more for smaller companies.
