Horseracing in the UK could be about to see a huge change in the way that it operates in order to attract a new generation of fans to the sport. One of the proposed changes could see an end to the traditional odds system, which is often described as confusing to new fans, and replacing it with a decimal system.
This is just one of many changes that could help to modernize racing, and is included in a new 10-point plan by Racing for Change. The organization wants to broaden the appeal of the sport to counter what it sees as the waning popularity of racing.
Also included in the proposed changes are the changing of fixtures in order to make the seasons more defined; listing the jockeys and trainers by their first names and surnames; and simplifying the racecourse announcements to make them easier to understand for new players.
Chris McFadden, the chairman of Racing for Change, described British horseracing as “the envy of the racing world,” but added that “the sport needs to work harder to connect with a wider public.” He said that they would start to trial the changes to gauge their success, which could pave the way for the changes becoming permanent in the near future.
