1. England blamed for discouraging fans from World Cup

For fans who want to put a bet on the football World Cup in the summer, England could well be a good choice. England is currently sitting in third position as favorites to lift the World Cup trophy, so it is sure to attract attention. But now the country has been criticized for scaring fans away from the event by provoking unnecessary fears in traveling fans.

Sales of tickets to this year’s event have been slower than expected and this could hurt the competition as a whole. It is the first time it has been held in Africa, and the violence in the country, or the media stories about it, could be partly to blame for this slow uptake of tickets.

The FIFA general secretary, Jérôme Valcke, has now named England as a culprit in propagating the fear. He called for “fair treatment” for South Africa from the British media. The events in Angola where the Togo football team came under attack by machine guns have not helped matters, and England fans have even been encouraged to employ chauffeurs to accompany them in South Africa due to the level of violence.

England are currently third favorites to win the World Cup at odds of 11/2. They sit behind second-placed Brazil with odds of 5/1, and first-placed Spain at 9/2.
