1. New Zealand Racing Board upgrades betting software

The New Zealand Racing Board (NZRB) has announced that it is replacing its ageing betting system, Jetbet, with the latest technology from Media and Gaming. The Australian company will provide NZRB with its Typhoon system, which will be fully up and running by December 2010. The Jetbet system has been in place since 1982.

The software used by most betting companies comes with serious limitations. Typhoon overcomes these to bring online sports betting into the 21st century. Nicholas Plowman, the managing director of Media and Gaming, said the new contract “will ensure the NZRB can take a leading position in an increasingly competitive global entertainment market.” NZRB is the company’s first international client.

Many betting companies have experienced difficulties with the transition to the internet. Typhoon claims to overcome these. It will allow NZRB to cover more betting events, to process bets more easily, and to enhance its customer service offerings.

Typhoon will also make it a lot easier for NZRB to expand its operations overseas if it decides to. Chief executive Andrew Brown also said that it would allow them to increase their revenue. He described the 28-year-old Jetbet as “ancient in technology terms," and added that "the move to a new system is long overdue.”
