Congressmen Continue Fight Against Online Casinos Ban
The supporters of online gambling and online casinos aren't going down without a fight. Congressmen Barney Frank and Ron Paul are leading a new effort to overturn the 2006 bill which put a stop to much of the online gambling activity in the United States. Just earlier this month, federal officials testified in a Congressional hearing that they were having difficulty enforcing the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) due to ambiguity and a lack of clear regulations over online casino games sites and banks.
On Friday, Frank and Paul introduced a bill which may end up replacing the bill introduced by Frank last year. Rather than trying to overturn the UIGEA on moral grounds, it instead attempts to do so based on the issue of practicality. "While I do disagree with the underlying objective of the act, I believe that even those who agree with it ought to be concerned about the regulations' impact," Congressman Frank stated.
Frank and other opponents of the UIGEA maintain that because no clear guidelines were given to the banks and financial institutions, they often must block any financial transactions which even resemble online gambling activity to cover themselves from liability. Despite these concerns, the supporters of the ban maintain their views. A spokesman for Congressman Ryan Patmintra said, "Our office will vigorously oppose any efforts to repeal or water down any parts of the [federal law]."
