Last week, the Las Vegas Police made an arrest in a double homicide from last March when poker pro, Ernie Scherer, was arrested and taken to the Clark County Detention Center in Nevada. Scherer had been considered a "person of interest" in the case ever since the bodies of his parents were discovered on the Castlewood Country Club, on whose grounds the couple's home stood.
When Scherer attended the funeral service of his parents, police executed a warrant and searched Scherer's home. It was reported by the San Francisco Chronicle that a security camera caught Scherer's 2001 Camaro convertible in the area of the Country Club at the time of the murders. Scherer is best known for his poker play as a top twenty finalist in the 2007 World Series of Poker Omaha Hi-Lo event. Since he began his career on the Poker Tour in 2003, Ernie Scherer has won more than $340,000, including consecutive first place finishes on two World Series of Poker events.
According to the Alameda Sheriff's Department, the killings were financially motivated. Scherer had borrowed over $600,000 from his father for a condo in Brea, CA. With the economic recession, the condo went into foreclosure. Scherer, arrested and charged with two counts of murder with special circumstances and one count of murder for financial gain, faces the death penalty if convicted. Once an up and coming poker pro, Scherer is now known as the "Poker pro arrested for murder."
