Fear and Loathing of Arrest Warrants Scaring Execs from Vegas Convention
At least five online gaming operators have already abandoned the Vegas show. The recent arrests of Internet gambling officials has indeed frightened enough officials to render them too leery to set foot in the US for fear of being arrested.
The trend began this summer with the arrest of BetOnSports' former CEO David Carruthers. BetOnSports is one of the world's largest Internet gambling organizations. A number of other BetOnSports' executives were also arrested and the company was barred from accepting wagers from US residents.
According to Jaclyn Lesh, the Justice Department's spokesperson, operators of Internet gambling sites taking bets from US players run the risk of being prosecuted.
Representatives of the American Gaming Association, partners in organizing G2E, said 15 Internet companies registered to participate at the event, however only 10 are planning to attend, representing only a fraction of the over 750 companies taken part in the event.
