French Government To Open Up Online Gambling Industry
According to a recent report from the Dow Jones news bureau, the government of France is weighing the pros and cons of legalizing online gambling. A major issue in governments and nations around the industrialized world, this issue has gone as high as French Prime Minster Francois Fillon.
All online gambling activity and online casinos are illegal in France with the exception of the state-run casino Francaise des Jeux and horse racing PRU. With the increase in online gambling around the world turning online casinos into a billion-dollar industry, opponents to the ban are becoming more and more vociferous. The European Commission has voiced their desire for the French to comply with the EU's free competition agreements.
The Prime Minister was recently given the results of a study outlining compelling reasons and methods to legalize and regulate online casinos. The study recommends the issuing of licenses to restrict online bets to sporting events, to include bets on card games, and to legalize all online casino games with the exception of lotteries.
France is only the most recent European country to address its government monopoly on online gambling. Just last week, the Danish Minister of Taxation announced that the Danish government was looking to ease restrictions that would open up online casinos in the country. Holland and Germany have also taken recent steps to do the same.
