(1718-1792)
John Montagu was a British politician who served as secretary of state (1763-65, 1770-71) and first lord of the admiralty (1748-51, 1763, 1771-82). Montague presided at the admiralty over the English defeats of the American Revolution.
John Montagu was also a tough gambler and this is where he earned most of his fame. He disliked having to leave the gambling table, so when he and the other players became hungry, he commanded his servants to, "bring me a slice of meat between two slices of bread." Hence, the birth of the sandwich.
