Lake Tahoe straddles both the California and Nevada borders, and is surrounded on virtually all sides by towering rocky mountain peaks rising high above the tree line. The area is famous for its magnificent alpine skiing featuring 14 ski resorts which operate from late October until as late as May. Tahoe has also become known as a chic celebrity hot spot for its sensational skiing as well as casinos. Gambling, however, is only legal on the Nevada side of Lake Tahoe.
At a depth of 1645 feet (501 meters), Lake Tahoe boasts the second deepest lake in the United States with only Oregon's Crater Lake surpassing it at 1996 feet (608 meters). Some 65% of the lake's shoreline lies in Californian territory.
While wonderfully surrounded by majestic views and natural beauty, first time visitors are often surprised to find such an abundance of activity including the numerous casinos, shops, marinas, camping sites, and holiday homes & lodges.
History of Lake Tahoe
The building of gambling casinos began on the Nevada side of the lake in the mid 1950s. As host of the 1960 Squaw Valley Olympics, and the subsequent construction of a new highway, the region experienced a considerable boom particularly along the lake's shores.
Today, it is said that around half the number of visitors to Lake Tahoe travel there to indulge in sightseeing, fishing, hiking, boating, and camping out, while the other half are drawn to the Nevada side for the glitzy casinos, affordable dining, and star-studded entertainment.
