Online Gambling Addiction a Growing Problem on Campuses
With the growth of online casinos combined with the young generation’s proficiency with the internet, gambling addiction is a growing problem on college campuses in the United States and around the world. However, because the online gambling industry is so new and research and knowledge about it is lacking compared to other addictions, problem gambling may be a bigger issue than the experts have even realized.
The Institute for Research on Pathological Gambling and Related Disorders has learned that college students are more likely to gamble weekly than the general population. Moreover, the National Council on Problem Gambling has discovered that the earlier players begin to gamble, the higher the possibility of their developing an addiction. Most addicts begin gambling as teenagers, the same time that many college students are discovering both offline and online poker games in college campuses.
Research has also determined that that male college students are much more likely to gamble than females. Not surprisingly, this is correlated with males being more interested in sports and sports betting, another popular interest in college, especially in March when college basketball and its March Madness tournament are at their peaks.
Two factors isolated as reasons for gambling addictions among college students are a lack of control over impulses and poor skills of dealing with stress. With the current generation of students reporting a higher level of stress than the one before, this leads to a high level of online gambling activity for a demographic who may not remember life before online casino games. Psychologists are working furiously to understand effective treatments but with the online gambling industry being so new, more time is needed before successful measures can be put in place.
