Another Online Gambling Payment Processor Retreats
Supporters of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) scored another victory this week in the battle over the legality of online casinos in the U.S. Online payment processor ePassporte has recently decided to cease handling online gambling transactions within the United States due to the effective ban of the UIGEA.
Though the company has not commented in great detail, it is clear that this move is in response to pressure from the American Department of Justice. An official statement from the payment processor reads: "We have been advised that the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York is conducting a widespread investigation of internet gambling, including poker. All though (sic) we do not believe we have done anything illegal, we do not wish to be associated with anything that might be considered illegal by the United States government."
With many other companies having already withdrawn from the online casinos market, there are fewer and fewer options for American players. Despite recent efforts by two Congressmen to overturn the UIGEA, any results will not be immediate and leaves gamblers up in the air. Since 2006, it has been illegal for online payment processors to transfer money between individuals and online casinos although, contrary to popular belief, it is not illegal for individuals to play online casino games.
