Risk in Casino Games Exaggerated in Hollywood Films
Blockbuster Hollywood movies exaggerate the amount of risk associated with gambling and casinos, especially poker, according to gambling experts. Just as action films glamorize high-speed car chases, poker movies like "Rounders" exaggerate the stakes in any one hand.
Due to the increase in popularity of online casinos and casino games like Texas Hold'em in recent years, the moviemakers have only heightened the suspense to draw in viewers such as in "Snake Eyes" (craps) and "Two for the Money" (sports betting).
Rick Gupta, a Wall Street trader and professional player of online poker, makes the following observation: As opposed to what we see in the movies, "In reality, poker is a mathematical, long-term game in which real money is won or lost over thousands of hands. You'd have to be a maniac to put up your whole bankroll on one big play." However, on the big screen, movies like "Rounders" come down to that one big hand with Mike McD taking on Teddy KGB for all the marbles.
Because most fans of casino games are relative newcomers, screenwriters are forced to oversimplify the casino games for those who don't understand the reality, that betting is often a marathon, not a sprint." It is almost unthinkable that a professional, expert gambler would risk his entire lot on a single hand.
With the recent release of "21", it is widely expected that this movie will do for blackjack what the so many other films did for poker.
