Roulette Basics

Roulette is not only one of the oldest casino games in the world, it's also the most popular. This goes for the world of online casinos as well. Though at first a roulette table's layout can appear somewhat complicated, in fact this exciting game is incredibly simple to understand and play.

Anywhere from one to six players may participate at a roulette table. Each player is provided with different colored chips so that it is easy to keep track of the numbers on the layout that the players are betting on. Various denominations are available depending on the stakes at a particular roulette table. For example, roulette chips may be worth 25¢, 50¢, $1, or $2. Players playing the higher stakes games typically play with $5, $25 & $100 casino chips.

A European roulette table differs from an American roulette table in that a European roulette wheel comprises 36 numbered slots along with one zero for a total of 37. American roulette wheels, on the other hand, contain the same 36 numbered slots, plus a single zero and a double zero slot for a total of 38 stops.

Playing roulette couldn't be easier. Every roulette game starts with the players placing their bets and the dealer spinning the wheel in one direction. The dealer then rolls a small ball along the inner rim of the wheel in the opposite direction. The ball eventually drops into one of the numbered slots, designating that number as the declared winner for that particular game. An average roulette game will undergo approximately 60 to 80 spins of the roulette wheel per hour. With each spin the ball has an equal chance of landing in any one of the 37 or 38 slots.

Players enter their wagers by placing their chips on the roulette table's betting areas. Once all the bets have been placed, the ball is dropped onto the spinning roulette wheel as the players - as well as spectators - eagerly wait for the ball to eventually land on what will become the "winning" number.

Bets placed on the winning number, or on groups which include the winning number, are paid a multiple of the original wager, and all the losing bets are collected by the casino/house.
