Roulette Terms
American Wheel - A roulette wheel having a total of 38 numbers (0, 00 and numbers 1-36).
Ball - A small plastic or metal ball spun in the opposite direction of the spinning wheel. The roulette ball indicates the payoffs for each spin each time it lands in a numbered pocket.
Bet on the Layout - A wager placed anywhere on the numbers portion of the table.
Carrי - French term meaning a Corner Bet.
Cheval - French term meaning a Split Bet
Colonne - French term meaning a Column Bet
Column Bet - A roulette table layout is divided into 3 columns. Bets on a combination of 12 numbers at the same time. Pays 2 to 1.
Corner Bet - A gamble on 4 numbers.
Croupier - A casino employee who operates the roulette table along with other croupiers.
D'Alenbert System - A progressive wagering system. Two numbers are cancelled each time a previous bet is won, and one number - the sum of 2 end numbers - is added each time a previous wager is lost.
Dozen Bet - One of 3 dozen numbers on the layout. (Outside bet.)
En plein - French term meaning a Straight Up Bet.
En prison - French phrase literally meaning "in prison." A rule applied to even-money wagers only. When the outcome is zero, some online casinos will allow the player to either take back half his/her bet or leave it (in prison) for a subsequent spin. In the second case, if in the next spin the outcome is again zero, then the entire wager is lost.
European Wheel - A roulette wheel having 37 slots numbered 1-36 plus a single zero.
Even-Odd Bet - Pays 1-1 if the winning number is Even or Odd. This is an 18 number wager on the outside.
Five Number Bet - Common among American double-zero roulette wheels. It's a bet covering 0, 00, 1, 2, & 3.
French Wheel - A wheel having only one zero. Generally found in European casinos.
High or Low Bet - An even-money wager, either for the top half (19-36) or the bottom half (1-18) of the numbers. (Outside bet.)
Inside Bet - A bet anywhere on the layout, that is, on numbers.
La partage - a roulette rule akin to the En prison rule, only in this scenario the player loses half their bet and doesn't enjoy the option of leaving their bet "En prison" for a later spin. This refers to the 'outside' even-money wagers Red/Black, High/Low, Odd/Even & applies when the result is zero.
Martingale System - A well-known roulette system dating back over 100 years. A player doubles his/her bet after each loss until he/she wins (or runs out of cash).
Neighbors - The numbers to the immediate left & right of the winning number. Non-Value Chip - A gambling chip in which the dollar value is established by the amount of the buy-in and the number of chips taken. Example: a buy-in of $200 for 50 chips equals a value of $4 per chip.
Orphans - Commonly heard in European casinos. Refers to a bet on 3 specific numbers 6, 34 & 17 that are neighbors on the wheel, though far apart on the layout.
Orphelins - Commonly heard in European casinos. It's a bet on a specific group of numbers on a section of the roulette wheel which are neighbors on the wheel, though apart on the layout.
Outside Bet - Wagers on 1 to 1 even-money (red/black, odd/even, high/low) and 2 to 1 (dozen or column) payouts.
Parlay/Press - Leaving previous-round winnings on top of your current wager.
Payout (Pay Out) - The amount of money won and paid by the casino to the winning player.
Red-Black Bet - An 18-number bet which pays off at 1-1.
Sixainne - French for 6 line bet.
Six line Bet - A bet on 6 numbers at the same time.
Split Bet - A bet on 2 numbers.
Straight Up Bet - A bet on 1 single number.
Street Bet - A bet on 3 numbers.
Tiers du cylindre - French expression. Commonly heard in European casinos. It is a bet on a particular group of numbers on a section of the roulette wheel which are paired neighbors on the layout.
Toke - A tip/gratuity players give the dealer.

Voisins du Zero - French term. Common in European casinos. It is a wager on a particular group of numbers on a section of the roulette wheel neighboring the zero.

Zero, Double-Zero - Green in color. Players may bet the same way as numbers 1-36.
