Dr. Edward O. Thorp is a U.S. mathematics professor and the creator of the original card -counting system. He is considered by many to be the first Blackjack player to come up with a method to beat the casino. In 1958, Thorp received his Ph.D. for the University of California in Los Angeles and worked as a professor at the prestigious M.I.T for a couple of years. In 1962, Thorp authored a revolutionary book titled ‘Beat the Dealer.' It was the first publication ever in existence to claim that the dealer could be beaten with the help of card counting.

Top 10 Gambling Books

Over the years and with the increasing popularity of the worldwide casino industry, thousands of books on a wide variety of gambling topics have been written. Naturally, all gambling authors claim to be the top authority in the field and, thus, should be trusted in their teachings on gambling. However, after conducting an extensive research, the CasinosVIPLounge team has reached the conclusion that, while there are many extensively marketed gambling books, only a relatively small number of them are truly successful in providing their readers with valuable playing advice and useful recommendations.

Why We Gamble

STUDIES REVEAL over and over again that human risk-taking is perfectly normal and has actually evolved as a means for promoting survival. Every one of us takes a number of risks each and every day. But the successful risk-taker is one who recognizes when potential benefits are worth seeking even amidst the threat of personal risk, as opposed to when risks are not as great and thus unjustifiable.

Warning: Gambling at Online Casinos is Fun

The bad news is, gambling is a risky business and the odds of you winning any game, be it slots or roulette etc. are stacked against you. Okay, perhaps ‘stacked' is too strong a word. Still, no matter how you slice it, the casino will always enjoy an advantage over its players. And a very certain advantage at that. Without this edge, the chances of any such casino staying in business very long are... well... heavily stacked against them, plain and simple.

World’s Wackiest Wagers Ever Placed - Part 2

Following are some more of the most off-beat gambles our world has ever known:

When Christian evangelist Oral Roberts announced to a TV audience in 1987 that God told him he must raise 8 million dollars by March if he wanted to avoid his imminent death, Gene Maday, the late owner of Little Caesars tried to list a price on whether or not the Oral one would actually succeed and raise the money.

"I'd have made the over/under line at 4.6 million dollars," Maday was reported to have stated after gaming authorities annulled the bet and threw the not-so-good book at him. Maday went on to declare, "We'd book anything if the gaming board would let us."

Roberts ended up raising $9.1 million and isn't dead yet.

World’s Wackiest Wagers Ever Placed - Part 1

World’s Wackiest Wagers Ever Placed - Part 1Following are just some of the most off-beat bets the world has ever known:

Approximately 40 years ago a man named David Threlfall wagered 10 pounds British Sterling that a man would set foot on the moon before January 1st, 1970. Acclaimed betting firm, William Hill, gave Threlfall 1000 to 1 odds against this event occurring before the said deadline. With astronaut Neil Armstrong's historic declaration, "That's one small step for man; one giant leap for mankind," David Threfall became £10,000 richer. Unfortunately for Mr. Threfall, he subsequently killed himself by crashing the sports car he purchased with his winnings. Armstrong's lunar landing - it turned out - was just the beginning of numerous loony wagers to come.
