The Future is Here: Computer beats human poker player!

Can a computer program beat a human player at poker? Well, apparently it can! In the second man-against-machine competition staged at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas last weekend, Polaris II, a poker-savvy computer developed by scientists from the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, defeated seven poker coaches from Stoxpoker.com, a prominent online poker guide.

Last year, the former version of Polaris was outperformed by two high-profile poker professionals Phil Laak and Ali Eslami. At the time, one of Polaris' creators Michael Bowling was reported as saying that poker was more complicated than any other casino game, such as Blackjack or Backgammon. This, according to Bowling, made it very difficult for the machine to beat a human opponent.

Nevertheless, after certain modifications applied to Polaris, the computer was finally able to emerge victorious. It was reported that Bowling's team of developers altered the program's capacity to adapt to its human adversaries. Bowling ultimately added that Polaris' victory is a major milestone for his team and the entire poker world. Bowling expects to further enhance the computer's capacities in the nearest future.
