Video Poker Rules

Video Poker, ever since its inception in the early 1980s, has become one of the most popular games enjoyed at online casinos. Unlike traditional poker where gamblers face off against other competitors seated at a poker table, video poker enthusiasts play solo using computer technology to build their poker hands.

Video poker is basically draw poker in slot machine form. Gamblers hold or discard from 5 cards showing & get a second round of cards, or stand with a pat hand -- that is, a hand that's likely to win.

Just how popular is video poker? Well, it's become the most popular game of chance among casino players in the US. In fact, in a recent Las Vegas poll, 80% of respondents claimed they've already played video poker.

Video Poker & Table Poker differ in the following ways:

1. In video poker, a machine represents the house, not a live dealer. Also, the video machine
doesn't try to beat you.
2. You don't have to guess what the other player's hand might be, like when gambling against
others.
3. You can't bluff.
4. You don't risk having another player beat you. If you've got a strong hand, you win. In
regular poker, you can have a strong hand such as three-of-a-kind, yet lose to some other
player who's holding a stronger hand.
5. A wise decision in video poker could be a poor one in table poker. What may be
advantageous to hold in video poker may be disadvantageous in regular poker & vice versa.

Based on classic 5-card stud, video poker challenges gamblers to build the best possible
5-card hand. The player is dealt 5 cards and may choose to discard any or all of his/her
cards. New cards are dealt to replace those the player discards.

Payoffs are based on a scale. In other words, players are paid for hands as low as a pair of
10s or jacks all the way up to a royal flush. Similar to slot machines, video poker machines
are available in a number of denominations, with 25 cent & one dollar machines ranking most
popular. A lot of online casinos also provide progressive payoffs or bonuses for royal flushes
and other strong hands. Video poker games are available in a variety forms including 'Jacks
or Better' to 'Deuces Wild' & 'Jokers Wild.'

Beginning with the highest, hand rankings are as follows:

1. Five-of-a-Kind
2. Royal Flush
3. Straight Flush
4. Four-of-a-Kind
5. Full House
6. Flush
7. Straight
8. Three-of-a-Kind
9. Two Pair
10. A Pair

Video poker can also be played with a joker or wild cards. Thus, a five-of-a-kind hand is attainable and is the strongest possible hand.
